Our communities want clean air, a healthy climate, and a safe future. But, Ashland is behind on its climate action goals. That's why the Ashland Youth for Electrification Campaign is organizing to pass the Climate & Clean Air Package - a group of policies that would transition buildings in Ashland off of polluting fossil fuels. Ashland's Climate & Environment Policy Advisory committee just voted 6-1 to recommend this package to Council.
What we want: Pass the Climate & Clean Air Policy Package
This holistic policy package would include:
A pollution fee for connecting new homes to gas hookups. The fee would fund energy efficiency upgrades for low-income households.
A resolution to reduce fossil fuels in existing homes and new commercial and industrial buildings in the future
Key Talking Points:
Our Why:
For our Future: Youth in the Rogue Valley have grown up with increasing climate impacts as the norm - from droughts and wildfire smoke to ice storms. We deserve clean air and a livable future. The only way to achieve this is to begin the transition away from fossil fuel dependency in our city, now.
For Climate: Burning fossil fuels is the primary driver of the climate crisis, which grows exponentially worse each year. Ashland must pass this policy package to lessen gas dependency as a first step to protect our communities from increasing disaster.
For Public Health: Communities have the right to breathe clean air in their homes. Gas powered appliances create indoor pollution that leads to a high risk of childhood asthma and cancer.
For Affordability: Building new homes with electric appliances saves money up front and over time. Affordable housing developers already build 100% electric because it's cheaper and safer. Electric appliances are more efficient than gas appliances, saving residents money on utility bills.
