Ashland Youth for Electrification

Ashland Youth for Electrification

Our communities want clean air, a healthy climate, and a safe future. But, Ashland is behind on its climate action goals. That's why the Ashland Youth for Electrification Campaign is organizing to pass the Climate & Clean Air Ordinance - an emissions standard that would limit the amount of fossil fuel pollutants in new homes. This policy would ensure that new homes are constructed with efficient electric appliances, which would reduce the city’s fossil fuel usage, improve indoor air quality, and increase energy affordability.

Will you send a comment to the City of Ashland to make sure they pass this emissions standard?

Right now, Ashland City Staff is drafting an ordinance, but in order for the Climate and Environment Policy Advisory Committee (CEPAC) and City Council to pass it, they need to hear from you.

Why pass an emissions standard for new homes in Ashland?

  • Health: Gas powered appliances release toxic pollutants like NOx and Benzene, which cause asthma, blood cancers, heart disease, and more - especially in youth. Electric appliances improve home health and safety.

  • Affordability: Building with 100% efficient electric appliances is cheaper - for developers and saves residents money on utility bills. Meanwhile, Ashland’s gas utility Avista has raised its rates over 51% in the past 3 years.

  • Climate: Ashland committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the Climate and Energy Action Plan in 2017. Even while climate change is impacting the Rogue Valley more each year, Ashland is behind on meeting these goals. Transitioning new homes off of fossil fuel-based appliances would reduce climate emissions.

Are you a young person worried about your future in the face of climate change? A renter wanting more affordable and healthier options for housing? A health professional concerned about the rate of childhood asthma caused by gas appliances?

Have you experienced climate impacts like wildfires and smokey summers? Do you think you and your neighbors deserve clean air, inside your homes and out?

Submit a comment in support of the Ashland Youth for Electrification Campaign for an emissions standard and let decision-makers know why you think this is a smart and equitable choice for Ashland's future.
